The shark’s swimming power comes from its tail. The large upper part drives the tail down with each stroke and helps keep the shark’s body level. Otherwise, the creature’s weight would cause the head to tilt down. Sharks have to keep moving or they sink. The great white shark travels more than 300 miles (483 km) in a day.
